Cecil J.'s Story

Life I went to Talladega College in 1980. I signed up in the Biology Pre-Nursing dual degree program with Tuskegee. After my third year and a 1.82 cumulative GPA, I "punched out". Back to Columbus, Ohio. After three years of go nowhere jobs, I went back to Dega in the spring of 1987 to beg then academic Dean Joseph Thompson to allow me to re-enter and complete my studies. Praise be to God he had mercy on me and let me enroll! Mom and Dad were done (Financially) with my butt! I changed my curriculum pattern to Business Administration. I even managed to be elected to the Business and Economics Club as President, and Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) as President! Made the deans list a couple of times too! My biggest accomplishment was a surprise induction into the "Who's Who of Students in American Colleges and Universities!" God is so very good to us! I received that induction in 1989, the same year I graduated! I began a Management Trainee program in Talladega, Alabama at Crown Textile Co. the following fall. About a year in I was laid off. So, after that, off to Jacksonville, Alabama to Jacksonville State University. Began my Masters program there. Only took one class before I had to stop to take on a full time job. Fumbled around Alabama as a manager at a McDonald's then back to Dega, where I took on a job as an operations manager for a mom and pops company, Simmons Janitorial. Then my folks called and said that they needed me to come home and take care of the house, the note and all. So, back to Columbus, Ohio I went and began work for Pitney Bowes then for the Federal Government, Defense Finance & Accounting Services. Well, I decided if they wouldn't prom...Expand for more
ote a brotha, they could pay for my Masters Degree! I finally arned my Masters of Science in Administration, in 2000 from Central Michigan University. I worked for the Ohio Department of Taxation, Information Services Division from 1992 until 2005, when I moved to PHILLY for a career change! By the way, lost my mind and got married. Thank God for Divorces! Not that marriage is necessarily a bad thing, but as they say, "Fools RUSH IN!" That would be me! HA! I completed a two year Corporate Intern Program with the Department of Defense as a Contract Specialist in Philly. I was a buyer for the war fighter. I am also wrapping up the second year of my PhD program in Public Policy and Administration with a specialization in Public Health Services. Though I earned my Real Estate License in Ohio, I've been too busy to fool around with being an agent now. In February '07, I graduated from the government's Defense Logistics Agency's (DLA) Corporate Intern Program. 6/10/2007- I accepted a promotion and will build upon my Federal career (Same discipline, as a Contract Specialist) in Bethesda, Maryland with the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Had to move AGAIN! Now I administer (cradle to grave) research and development contracts in the fight against AIDS. I feel better now that I work in an effort to save lives instead of contributing to their demise. Maryland is a beautiful state and is a welcomed change of surroundings from hard, rough Philly! As always, glory & honor, praise and THANKS to almighty GOD! He has brought me a mighty long way! PS, Continue to be patient with me. HE STILL AIN'T DONE WITH ME YET!!! Peace!
